West Highland White Terrier

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier, or “Westie,” originated in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century, bred from terrier stock to hunt otters, badgers, and foxes. Breeders selected the pure white coat to distinguish the dogs from their quarry in dense underbrush. Valued originally for its courage, agility, and tireless work ethic in harsh terrain, today’s Westie is a small yet spirited and sociable companion. With an alert, friendly expression and high intelligence, the breed requires consistent but gentle training, regular physical and mental exercise, and routine grooming to maintain its bright white coat and cheerful disposition.
