Thai Ridgeback
The Thai Ridgeback is an ancient breed originating from Thailand, developed over centuries in relative isolation. Traditionally, it was used as a guard dog, hunter, and loyal companion for travelers, protecting both property and family. Its most distinctive feature is the “ridge” of hair running along the spine in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat. Today, the Thai Ridgeback is known for its confidence, intelligence, and strong loyalty to its owner. Naturally alert and reserved around strangers, it forms deep bonds with its family and has a strong protective instinct. This breed is best suited for experienced owners who can provide consistent training, structure, and sufficient physical activity, rewarding them with a truly unique and devoted companion.

Tough and active, with excellent jumping ability. A loyal family dog, but reserved and watchful with strangers. It is independent and makes its own decisions — subordination does not come naturally to it.
The very short coat with its characteristic ridge is undemanding. Fencing matters: the breed jumps exceptionally well and an ordinary fence is no obstacle to it. It tolerates heat, and cold considerably less well.
The dermoid sinus is watched — a congenital defect linked to the dorsal ridge that requires surgery; puppies are checked after birth. Otherwise a naturally healthy breed.
For an experienced owner with a house and secure fencing. Reservations with children. Not a breed for a first dog, nor for anyone expecting an obedient companion.
