Staffordshire Bullterrier

Staffordshire Bullterrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier originated in Staffordshire, England, in the mid-19th century, developed by crossing Bulldogs and Terriers to control rats and later for pit fighting. It features a stocky, muscular build, a short glossy coat in various colors, and is known for its strength and courage. Originally valued for its tenacity, endurance, and fearlessness, today’s Staffie is a friendly, loyal, and devoted family dog—especially good with children—that requires consistent yet gentle training, early socialization, and regular physical and mental exercise.

About the breed

What to know about the Staffordshire Bullterrier before you write to a breeder

History and origin

Developed in Staffordshire in the first half of the 19th century by crossing the bulldog with local terriers. Originally a fighting dog — once the pits were outlawed it became a companion, and the Kennel Club recognised it in 1935. Breeders have since selected deliberately for temperament towards people.

Temperament

Courageous and tenacious, and at the same time remarkably affectionate — the standard mentions its bond with children explicitly. Trusting and friendly with people, it can be intolerant of other dogs, and that is inheritance rather than a failure of training.

Care

The short coat needs little more than a wipe and an occasional brush. Up to an hour of exercise a day, but intense — the breed has strength and needs to spend it. Socialisation with other dogs from puppyhood and consistent lead work matter more.

Health

DNA tests cover hereditary cataract (HC) and L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L-2-HGA); both can be bred out and a responsible breeder will show the results. Hip dysplasia and skin allergies are also watched.

Who it suits

For a family that takes the dog in among them, and for a smaller house. Excellent with children. Reservations for a first-time owner — not for its nature with people, but for its strength and its relationship with other dogs.
