Shih-tzu

Shih-tzu

The Shih Tzu originated in ancient China, where it was bred as a companion dog for imperial courts and monasteries, valued for its affectionate nature, alertness, and dignified appearance rather than any working role. Often referred to as the “lion dog,” it was kept close to people and lived a pampered indoor life for centuries. Today, the Shih Tzu is a friendly, gentle, and people-oriented breed that thrives on companionship, adapts well to apartment living, and forms strong bonds with its family, while its long, flowing coat requires regular grooming to maintain its characteristic look.

About the breed

What to know about the Shih-tzu before you write to a breeder

History and origin

Its origin is Tibet, with patronage of the breed held by Great Britain. Dogs of this type lived for centuries in Tibetan monasteries and travelled as gifts to the Chinese imperial court. They reached Europe in the 1930s.

Temperament

Intelligent, active and alert. Friendly and at the same time independent — not a dog that hangs on a command. It has a mind of its own and takes itself seriously, which at its size lends it a certain comic dignity.

Care

The long coat needs daily combing or it mats; many owners choose a shorter clip. Eyes and the fold above the nose are cleaned regularly. Exercise short but regular.

Health

The shortened muzzle brings poorer tolerance of heat and exertion, and in some dogs BOAS. Eyes (corneal drying, inherited disease), patellar luxation and the spine are watched. Do not exert the breed in hot weather.

Who it suits

For a flat, a calmer household and a first-time owner. Gets on well with children who understand that a dog is not a toy. Wrong for anyone unwilling to comb every day.
