Samoyed
The Samoyed originates from Siberia, where it was bred by the Samoyedic peoples to herd reindeer, pull sleds, and live closely alongside humans in harsh Arctic conditions, even sleeping with families to provide warmth. This close bond shaped the breed’s friendly, social nature and strong attachment to people. Today, the Samoyed is known for its gentle temperament, intelligence, and characteristic “Samoyed smile,” making it a popular family companion. It thrives on human interaction, regular exercise, and mental stimulation, and while its thick white coat requires consistent grooming, it rewards its owners with loyalty, cheerfulness, and an affectionate personality.

About the breed
From northern Russia and Siberia, where the nomadic Samoyedic peoples used it to guard and drive reindeer herds and to pull sledges. Patronage of the breed is held by the Nordic Kennel Union. It reached Europe with the polar expeditions around 1900.
Friendly, sociable and cheerful. Suspicion is foreign to it — it will not make a guard dog, though it will give voice. It is independent and stubborn, as northern breeds tend to be, and training asks for patience.
The dense double coat is combed at least weekly, and daily and thoroughly during the two annual moults. The coat is not clipped — it protects against heat as well. The breed needs more than two hours of exercise a day and tolerates cold far better than heat.
Hip dysplasia, inherited eye disease and diabetes are watched. Specific to the breed is Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy, confirmed by DNA test and able to be bred out.
For an active household with space and a garden that will survive digging, and a home that will survive the coat. Excellent with children. Reservations for a first-time owner — for the independence and the grooming.
Sledge and companion dog.
Companion; sledge and endurance sports.
