History and origin
Despite French patronage, it descends from the European water dogs that retrieved shot waterfowl — hence the clip, meant to protect joints and chest in cold water. From a gundog it became a dog of the court and later one of the most widespread breeds of all.
Temperament
A dog renowned for loyalty and for its capacity to learn, which makes it a particularly pleasant companion. It is sensitive to tone of voice and to the mood of the household; harsh methods do not work with it and are not needed.
Care
The coat does not shed but grows continuously — clipping every six to eight weeks and combing several times a week are a condition, not an option. Ears are checked and cleaned regularly. Exercise needs depend on the variety.
Health
Different things are screened by variety: in the Standard, hip dysplasia and gastric torsion; in the small varieties, patellar luxation and inherited eye disease (DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy). Addison's disease and sebaceous adenitis are common to all.
Who it suits
Suits a family and a first-time owner, and it is the breed most often recommended to allergy sufferers. The condition is a willingness to pay for clipping or to learn to do it.
