Golden retriever
The Golden Retriever originated in 19th-century Great Britain, where it was bred as a working dog for retrieving game, especially waterfowl. Thanks to its intelligence, soft mouth, and eagerness to cooperate, it quickly became a favorite among hunters. Its name reflects the breed’s characteristic golden coat, one of its most recognizable features. Today, the Golden Retriever is one of the most popular family dogs worldwide. It is well known for its friendly, calm, and patient nature, making it an excellent companion for children and other animals. The breed is widely used as an assistance, therapy, and search-and-rescue dog. It thrives on human contact, regular exercise, and mental stimulation, rewarding its owners with loyalty, affection, and a gentle temperament.

About the breed
Developed in the second half of the 19th century by Lord Tweedmouth on his Scottish estate, crossing a yellow retriever with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. The Kennel Club recognised it in 1913, first as the ‘yellow’ retriever; the present name dates from 1920.
Friendly, even-tempered and willing to work with people. Watchfulness and suspicion are not in its nature — it will not make a guard dog and should not be asked to. It learns readily because working alongside a person is reward enough.
Brush at least twice a week, more during moult — this breed sheds heavily. Check the pendant ears and dry them after swimming. It needs more than two hours of exercise a day, and swimming comes naturally.
Hip and elbow dysplasia and inherited eye disease are screened, with an annual eye examination. Progressive retinal atrophy is confirmed by DNA test. The breed has a raised incidence of cancer, so keep weight down and avoid overloading growing joints.
Suits a family, including one with small children, and a first-time owner. It needs company — long hours alone do not agree with it. Not the dog for anyone looking for a guardian.
Gundog — retriever of game on land and water.
Family companion, guide and assistance dog, search and rescue, therapy dog; still a retriever in the field.
