History and origin
From Finland, where the Sámi used it for centuries with reindeer herds. It originally guarded and gave warning, and later drove as well. The Finnish Kennel Club registered the breed in 1945 and the standard took its present form in 1967.
Temperament
Calm, friendly and willing to learn, and at the same time alert — it announces change with its voice, a remnant of work with the herds. Welcoming to people including strangers, and exceptionally patient with children.
Care
The double coat is combed weekly, and considerably more often during moult. It is not clipped. Up to an hour of exercise a day is enough, though the breed appreciates work for the head. It takes frost very well and heat poorly.
Health
One of the healthier breeds, and long-lived. DNA tests cover progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA) and hereditary cataract; hip dysplasia is screened.
Who it suits
For a family, a smaller house and a first-time owner. Excellent with children. Expect barking, and expect it to be unenthusiastic in summer.
