History and origin
The breed arose in the USA from a hairless puppy born in 1972 in a litter of rat terriers. From it a separate hairless line was deliberately bred. The FCI does not recognise the breed; it is registered by the American United Kennel Club.
Temperament
Lively, bright and affectionate. It has the temperament of a terrier in a more sociable form — closely bonded to the family and poor at being left alone. It is alert and will give warning.
Care
It has no coat, and that makes care harder rather than easier: the skin is washed and moisturised, protected with sunscreen in summer and with clothing in winter. Up to an hour of exercise a day.
Health
The absence of coat means sensitivity to sun and cold and a tendency to skin irritation and acne. Patellar luxation and inherited eye disease are watched. The breed is otherwise healthy and long-lived.
Who it suits
For a flat and a family that is mostly at home; suitable for a first-time owner. Often recommended to allergy sufferers. Wrong where the dog spends time outdoors unsupervised.
