Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute originates from Alaska, where it was bred by the Mahlemut Inuit tribe as a powerful sled dog capable of hauling heavy loads over long distances in extreme Arctic conditions. Known for its strength, endurance, and cooperative nature, it played a vital role in survival and transportation rather than speed-focused racing. Today, the Alaskan Malamute is a friendly, confident, and social breed that bonds closely with its family, but its independent mindset and high energy levels require experienced handling, consistent training, and plenty of physical activity, making it best suited for active owners who appreciate a strong and resilient companion.

About the breed

What to know about the Alaskan Malamute before you write to a breeder

History and origin

The oldest arctic sledge breed, named after the Mahlemut people of Alaska. Unlike the Siberian Husky it was not bred for speed but for hauling heavy loads over long distances — which is why the standard speaks of ‘desirable freighting sizes’.

Temperament

Affectionate and friendly, but not a one-man dog. A loyal, devoted companion, playful in invitation, yet generally impressive by its dignity after maturity. It is independent and can be intolerant of other dogs, particularly of the same sex.

Care

The dense double coat is combed at least weekly and daily while the undercoat is shed — the moult is heavy and lasts weeks. It needs more than two hours of exercise a day and solid fencing: digging and finding a way out come naturally.

Health

Hip dysplasia, inherited polyneuropathy (DNA test) and eye disease including hereditary cataract are screened. Specific to the breed is chondrodysplasia, confirmed by DNA test.

Who it suits

For an experienced owner with space and an appetite for being outdoors in any weather. Good with children. Not a breed for a first dog, nor for a warm flat.

Original use

Sledge dog.

Current use

Companion; sledge sports, canicross and hiking.
